Nairobi County Government has set aside Ksh 800 million for the refurbishment of the City Stadium to international standards.
Speaking during the groundbreaking of the Talanta Sports City Stadium at Jamhuri grounds, Nairobi County Governor Johnson Sakaja put open the plans to renovate some of the existing stadia in the capital.
The county boss noted that his government had invested a lot of resources to upgrade various stadia across Nairobi asking the national government to chip in by pumping in more money.
Among the amenities earmarked for revamping are the iconic Woodley grounds in Kibera slums and the official launching of Dandora Stadium which is set for April.
“We are doing the Joe Kadenge Stadium initially City Stadium, we are revamping it and hope that we can count on the President’s support to achieve this,” stated Sakaja.
“We have set a budget of Ksh 800 million to ensure we complete the projects and have also asked the Sports Fund boss to add a similar amount or 1 billion to construct the stadium together and we know if we get a boost we are going to construct something appealing,’ added Sakaja.
The former AFC Leopards patron further added that his administration was considering making a Joe Kadenge statue at the City Stadium once the renovation works at the iconic stadium are completed.
Kadenge is regarded as one the finest footballers Kenya has ever produced in his 36 years of playing career. The respected winger had stints with Maragoli FC and Abaluhya FC alongside the Harambee Stars before venturing into management where he stood in the dugout for Maragoli United from 1975 to 1980.
He had a stint with the national team in 2002 as the head coach before he succumbed to a stroke on 7 July 2019.
“We are doing the Joe Kadenge stadium which was known as City Stadium, we are revamping it and also doing Woodley Stadium.”
“We are going to have a statue of Joe Kadenge one of the greatest footballers in the country, outside Kadenge stadium we will have his statue,” asserted Sakaja.
Sakaja further hinted that the Dandora Stadium is likely to be launched during the Chapa Dimba Na Safaricom festivals in April.
“As a county government, we have made a lot of progress we have completed the Dandora Stadium which had stalled in the previous regime. We are going to launch it with Safaricom during the Chapa Dimba festival in April,” he stated.
The county boss challenged the Football Kenya Federation to have a formidable team in place that will continue to produce and nature talents even after the 2027 tournament
“I believe we are ready for takeoff as host and we cannot be eliminated in the first round of a tournament we are hosting; therefore, we have to put resources together to ensure we create a formidable team and our country should continue to produce talent and successful footballers long after the tournament,” he added.
